B01 – Electrically conductive and piezoactive materials for multifunctional implants for bone and cartilage regeneration

Summary of the work programme

The project will provide an electroactive hydrogel library based on different modifications of oxidised alginate-gelatin (ADA-GEL) for the various application requirements in ELAINE. The applications vary from their use as cartilage replacement materials to coatings for the functionalisation of load-bearing titanium implants. Besides the material and process investigations on three dimensionally (3D)-printed piezoelectric and bioactive scaffolds for bone regeneration the aim is to assess the bone cell response on the piezoelectric effect. A new 3D printing process combining hydrogel bioprinting and fused deposition modelling will be investigated to realise a biphasic scaffold for osteochondral defects.
