A sampling and measurement system was developed, which was able to investigate the physical and chemical properties of aggressive and hot flue gas aerosols as well as to generate particle mass balances in boilers of incineration plants. The sampling probe dilutes and cools the aerosol with a porous tube diluter (PTD). From the measurements performed at two MSI and a BMI several potential causes for corrosion of the superheaters arised: The plant with low corrosion had a smaller number of particles and at the same time, less sticky and aggressive particles. Additionally, sulfation of the particles during their flight proceeded 50 % further than in the plant with high corrosion rates. The particles with a diameter of 1 µm to 20 µm, which represented the minimum of a bimodal size distribution each time, showed the highest corrosive potential.
