The oxidative cleavage of vegetable fatty acids for instance by ozone
leads to mono- and dicarboxylic acids. It had to be
investigated whether supported nanoscale gold
catalysts are suited to catalyze such cleavage reactions. For the first time, the
cleavage of vicinal diols, as for instance
9,10-dihydroxystearic acid methyl ester, is shown with good yields by using
supported gold catalysts and O2.
Furthermore, a method for the determination of catalytic activities on
the basis of specific surface areas had to be developed. The use of n-dodecanthiol
in a liquid phase chemisorption method allowed for
the determination of the specific gold surface area and consequently, of the
areal reaction rate. Concerning the method of calculation, for the first time, the
consideration of particle size dependent surface properties enhanced the
accuracy of the obtained data.
