Previous work suggested that regulatory feedback from photorespiration to the Calvin-Benson cycle could exist and be relevant for acclimatization to changes in the environment. This hypothesis was tested by using transgenic Arabidopsis lines with higher and lower phosphoglycolate (2-PG) phosphatase activity. Such change results in a modified steady-state content of 2-PG, which in turn alters operation of the Calvin-Benson cycle, particularly the fraction of triosephosphate used for the synthesis of transitional starch. Additionally, photosynthetic gas exchange and in turn plant growth are affected.
