This PhD thesis introduces a new biomass-derived building block, 2,5-dioxohexanal (DOH), which was synthesized from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) via selective hydrogenation followed by oxidation with 1‐hydroxyhexane‐2,5‐dione (HHD) as intermediate. Under acidic condition, DOH was converted to benzenoid aromatics and 3-hydroxypyridinium salts through aldol cyclization reactions with or without the aid of amines.
